Ageing Namma Metro fleet set for repairs

Bengaluru: In an effort to address recurring technical failures, BMRCL has drawn up plans for a comprehensive overhaul of 57 Namma Metro trains operating on the Purple and Green lines. Each of these trains has completed 10 lakh kilometres, making detailed inspections and component replacement necessary.

The maintenance drive will focus on identifying worn-out equipment, repairing faulty systems and replacing parts wherever required. Technical snags have affected some older trains during service, occasionally leaving them stranded on the tracks and inconveniencing passengers.

Namma Metro‘s initial operations began in 2011 with five trains on the Purple Line between MG Road and Baiyappanahalli. The fleet has since grown, with 57 trains currently serving the Purple and Green corridors.

BMRCL has ordered 21 new trains to strengthen capacity and accommodate passenger demand. Four have already arrived, while 17 are yet to be delivered. The corporation intends to commence the planned overhaul of the older trains once the remaining trains are received.

The proposed exercise could also reduce expenditure. A new metro train costs around Rs 50 crore, whereas comprehensive repairs and refurbishment of an existing train are estimated to cost Rs 15 crore. The difference would allow BMRCL to save about Rs 35 crore for every train refurbished instead of replaced.

The work will include checks on motors, propulsion systems, electrical equipment, cables, batteries, wheels, axles, brakes and doors. Safety mechanisms, air-conditioning, ventilation, signalling and control systems, electronic equipment, passenger seats and interior fittings will also undergo inspection.

Parts suitable for restoration will be repaired, while components that are beyond repair or need replacement will be changed. BMRCL expects the measures to improve fleet reliability, reduce disruptions and strengthen passenger safety.
