Arunachal Police seeks search warrant against journalist Tongam Rina over anti-dam protest violence

The Arunachal Pradesh Police has sought a search warrant against journalist Tongam Rina in connection with the violence that broke out in Pasighat town during a protest against the Upper Siang dam project.

Several organisations have been protesting against the proposed 12,500-megawatt power project on the Siang river. It will be built by the government-owned power company National Hydroelectric Power Corporation.

The police had arrested 69 persons and detained four after protesters on October 23 vandalised and set fire to an office of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation and a police station in Pasighat following the use of tear gas by security personnel during the agitation.

Along with Rina, the deputy editor of The Arunachal Times, the police application on Tuesday also urged the chief judicial magistrate to issue search warrants against youth leader Otul Jerang, activist Tajong Talom and lawyer Sunny Tayeng.

Jerang, Talom, and lawyer and activist Ebo Mili were arrested in connection with the violence and are in judicial custody.

On Thursday, Rina said that the “intimidation” would not “stop me from writing or my activism”. She said that the violence in Pasighat would not have happened if the police and the government had handled the protests better.
