Hyderabad: The first anniversary meeting of Suraksha, published under the Telangana Police Department, was held at the City Police College in Petlaburj, Hyderabad.
Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) and chief editor stressed the need to effectively communicate police services, sacrifices and public welfare initiatives to people.
Addressing the gathering, he said Suraksha should play a key role in presenting facts to the public when misleading reports about the police circulate, besides highlighting public issues, police services and crime awareness.
“The methods of communication have undergone significant changes over the years. In the past, news reached people through Urdu, English and Telugu newspapers, followed by television broadcasts that delivered news within limited time slots,”
“With advances in technology, mobiles, live broadcasts and social media have expanded significantly. And that is why verification and fact-checking have become important and a major challenge,” he said.
He added that some reports about the police were published for personal reasons or presented by distorting facts.
The DGP said the primary objective of Suraksha should be to regularly inform people about reforms in the police department, services available to them and measures being taken to prevent crime.
He emphasised accuracy, clarity and public interest in news coverage, expressing the hope that Suraksha would serve as an information bridge between the police department and the public.
