Makkah: Sheikh Dr Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, President of Religious Affairs at the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, has condemned continued Houthi attacks targeting Makkah and Madinah, describing them as an assault on the sanctity of Islam’s two holiest cities.
In a statement, Al-Sudais said the attacks violated Islamic Sharia, which prohibits aggression and calls for the protection of sacred sites. He accused the Houthi militia of disregarding the religious significance of the Two Holy Mosques and the sentiments of Muslims, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
He added that targeting holy sites, civilians and facilities was prohibited under Islamic law and violated international norms.
Al-Sudais said the attacks would not undermine Saudi Arabia’s security and stability, but would strengthen the resolve of the Kingdom’s leadership and people to protect the Two Holy Mosques and their visitors.
Praising the Saudi leadership’s efforts to safeguard Islam’s holy sites, he stressed that their security was “a red line that must not be breached”.
His condemnation came amid reports of a fresh wave of attacks across Saudi Arabia, with air defences intercepting ballistic missiles and drones targeting several regions, including Makkah, Madinah and Riyadh.
Saudi authorities said two ballistic missiles launched towards the Makkah and Madinah regions were intercepted on Saturday. Civil Defence teams responded to falling debris at several locations in western Saudi Arabia, including Wadi Al Mughammas in Makkah, Al Nuzha in Jeddah, Wadi Jalil in Taif and Masturah in Rabigh.
The Houthis denied targeting the two holy cities, describing Saudi Arabia’s allegations as a “huge lie”.
